David Young
What follows is a collection of poems, which we deem representative of the highest exponent of English literature. They are true literary and theological gems. Through them one will find the highest expression of human ideals and values, passed down through generations.
These poems have been compiled for recitation purpose. They represent our English counterpart to Chinese classics. Through the recitation program, we ask our children to recite them leisurely without worrying about memorizing them. To facilitate correct pronunciation, these recitation materials should be used in conjunction with the accompanying CDs. These CDs were carefully produced using different children’s voices to enhance clarity.

The Road Not Taken,.mp3

Robert Frost,1874 - 1963

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I  --

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

Big is small, big and small are one,

Auguries of Innocence,

William Blake - 18th century,

To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild flower;

Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.

God appears, and God is light,

 Dream vs. road,

If somebody prays for patience do you thing God will give them the patience, or gives them the opportunity to be patient; if praying for courage then just give them the courage, or provide them a chance to be courageous. If somebody prays for a family be closer, do you thing God will grant them the warm fuzzy feelings, or provides them the opportunity to love each other.

 Deal with the Adversities

Excerpted by Franklin in Virginia, USA
Adversity is the pepper of life. However, it makes people feel very uneasy and suffering sometimes. Here shares some tips; hopefully one or two of them help you to pass over the hard time:

1. Be an observer of what’s happening, not a doer. Put the worst result in front of you, which is to leave this body forever and enter into the eternity, which is the Lord’s will. See how bad this will harm you.

3. Today will be finally the past. Tomorrow will be a fine day. It always happens in my life.

4. Read the physics behind this arrangement, behind this test; read what Hes expects your deed from this event. Thanksgiving to this opportunity; you won’t have it when in heaven.

5. Remember the good things in your life. This will give you a better feeling. You have a car to drive, a comfortable house to live in; you have belief in God … Thanksgiving and cherish how lucky you are compared to others, this will help you lessen your burden in your mind. Always positive; positive attract positive.

6. When Lord close the door, somewhere Hes open the window.

7. Never over-reacting into new karma; rather harm yourself than involve others. Always pray for Inner Master to pass this hard time successfully.

My statement as a graduate student advisor

My goal as a graduate student advisor is to guide the students to fulfill a good project, and, very important, to help the students to build enough capability to find and to fulfill their future job(s). This capability includes not only their academic faculty but also good personal quality for career success.

As for myself, the detailed resume is at: http://km2000.us/franklinduan/

In short, I graduated from Tsinghua University in 1985 and 1987 respectively for B.E. and M.E., and a Ph.D. in George Mason University in Virginia USA in 1998. I worked in Semiconductor and IC industries in Silicon Valley, California for over 10 years. In 2013 I joined Shanghai Jiaotong University.

My expectation to the student:

1.      Get graduated: wish + effort

2.      Find a job: to know the way

3.      Build inner quality

In fact I wish the 3rd item shall be moved to the top in the order of importance. My observation told me that once you have the 3rd quality ready, the other two and your successful life are automatically there. The quality, not only reside on the well-known academic faculty but also the essential EQ: 1. The response – bility = the ability to response; 2. Always method, not excuses.

 Tomorrow lyrics,

The sun will come out tomorrow , bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow. they'll be sun , just thinking about tomorrow , clears away the cobwebs and the sorrow, 'till their none. when i'm stuck with a day that's gray and lonely, i just think of my chin and grin and say oh.  the sun will come out tomorrow , so you gotta hang until tomorrow . come what may, tomorrow tomorrow i love ya tomorrow , your always a day away , , when i'm stuck with a day that's gray and lonely, i just think of my chin and grin and say oh. the sun'll come out tomorrow , so you gotta hang until tomorrow , come what may, tomorrow tomorrow i love ya tomorrow , your always a day away , tomorrow tomorrow i love ya tomorrow , your always a day away.

mp3-3: Benjamin Franklin 's letter about life after:

benjamin franklin life after.mp3

Benjamin Franklin:  A letter about life after:

Philadelphia.

February 22.  1756,

Dear Child.

I condole with you.  We have lost a most dear and valuable relation.  but it is the will of God and Nature that these mortal bodies be laid aside.  when the soul is to enter into real life; It is rather an embryo state.  a preparation for living. A man in not completely born until he be dead, Why then should we grieve that a new child is born among the immortals? A new member added to their happy society?

We are spirits.

That bodies should be lent us.  while they can afford us pleasure.  assist us in acquiring knowledge.  or doing good to our fellow creatures.  is a kind and benevolent act of God.

when they become unfit for these purposes and afford us pain instead of pleasure instead of an aid.  become an encumbrance and answer none of the intentions for which they were given.  it is equally kind and benevolent that a way is provided by which we may get rid of them.

Death is that way.

We ourselves prudently choose a partial death.  In some cases a mangled painful limb.  which cannot be restored.  we willingly cut off.  He who plucks out a tooth.  parts with it freely since the pain goes with it.  and he that quits the whole body.  parts at once with all pains and possibilities of pains and diseases it was liable to.  or capable of making him suffer.

Our friend and we are invited abroad on a party of pleasure,  that is to last for ever.  His chair was first ready and he is gone before us.  We could not all conveniently start together.  and why should you and I be grieved at this.  since we are soon to follow.  and we know where to find him.

Adieu.

Benjamin Franklin

mp3-4: Helen keller three days to see.mp3

I, naturally, should want most to see the things which have become dear to me through my years of darkness. You, too, would want to let your eyes rest on the things that have become dear to you so that you could take the memory of them with you into the night that loomed before you.

If, by some miracle, I were granted three seeing days, to be followed by a relapse into darkness, I should divide the period into three parts.

The First Day

On the first day, I should want to see the people whose kindness and gentleness and companionship have made my life worth living. First I should like to gaze long upon the face of my dear teacher, Mrs. Anne Sullivan Macy, who came to me when I was a child and opened the outer world to me. I should want not merely to see the outline of her face, so that I could cherish it in my memory, but to study that face and find in it the living evidence of the sympathetic tenderness and patience with which she accomplished the difficult task of my education. I should like to see in her eyes that strength of character which has enabled her to stand firm in the face of difficulties, and that compassion for all humanity which she has revealed to me so often.

I do not know what it is to see into the heart of a friend through that "Window of the soul", the eye. I can only "see" through my finger tips the outline of a face. I can detect laughter, sorrow, and many other obvious emotions. I know my friends from the feel of their faces. But I cannot really picture their personalities by touch. I know their personalities, of course, through other means, through the thoughts they express to me, through whatever of their actions are revealed to me. But I am denied that deeper understanding of them which I am sure would come through sight of them, through watching their reactions to various expressed thoughts and circumstances, through noting the immediate and fleeting reactions of their eyes and countenance.

Friends who are near to me I know well, because through the months and years they reveal themselves to me in all their phases; but of casual friends I have only an incomplete impression, an impression gained from a handclasp, from spoken words which I take from their lips with my finger tips, or which they tap into the palm of my hand.

How much easier, how much more satisfying it is for you who can see to grasp quickly the essential qualities of another person by watching the subtleties of expression, the quiver of a muscle, the flutter of a hand. But does it ever occur to you to use your sight to see into the inner nature of a friends or acquaintance/ Do not most of you seeing people grasp casually the outward features of a face and let it go at that?

For instance can you describe accurately the faces of five good friends? some of you can, but many cannot. As an experiment, I have questioned husbands of long standing about the color of their wives' eyes, and often they express embarrassed confusion and admit that they do not know. And, incidentally, it is a chronic complaint of wives that their husbands do not notice new dresses, new hats, and changes in household arrangements.

The eyes of seeing persons soon become accustomed to the routine of their surroundings, and they actually see only the startling and spectacular. But even in viewing the most spectacular sights the eyes are lazy. Court records reveal every day how inaccurately "eyewitnesses" see. A given event will be "seen" in several different ways by as many witnesses. Some see more than others, but few see everything that is within the range of their vision.

Oh, the things that I should see if I had the power of sight for just three days!

The first day would be a busy one. I should call to me all my dear friends and look long into their faces, imprinting upon my mind the outward evidences of the beauty that is within them. I should let my eyes rest, too, on the face of a baby, so that I could catch a vision of the eager, innocent beauty which precedes the individual's consciousness of the conflicts which life develops.

And I should like to look into the loyal, trusting eyes of my dogs - the grave, canny little Scottie, Darkie, and the stalwart, understanding Great Dane, Helga, whose warm, tender , and playful friendships are so comforting to me.

On that busy first day I should also view the small simple things of my home. I want to see the warm colors in the rugs under my feet, the pictures on the walls, the intimate trifles that transform a house into home. My eyes would rest respectfully on the books in raised type which I have read, but they would be more eagerly interested in the printed books which seeing people can read, for during the long night of my life the books I have read and those which have been read to me have built themselves into a great shining lighthouse, revealing to me the deepest channels of human life and the human spirit.

In the afternoon of that first seeing day. I should take a long walk in the woods and intoxicate my eyes on the beauties of the world of Nature trying desperately to absorb in a few hours the vast splendor which is constantly unfolding itself to those who can see. On the way home from my woodland jaunt my path would lie near a farm so that I might see the patient horses ploughing in the field perhaps I should see only a tractor!) and the serene content of men living close to the soil. And I should pray for the glory of a colorful sunset.

When dusk had fallen, I should experience the double delight of being able to see by artificial light which the genius of man has created to extend the power of his sight when Nature decrees darkness.

In the night of that first day of sight, I should not be able to sleep, so full would be my mind of the memories of the day.
